DISC CLUTCHES/BRAKES

Disc clutches and brakes use friction material to transmit torque from one plate (disc) to another. They are actuated by air or hydraulics. The disc style units can be used as a clutch or a brake depending on how the unit is mounted on the equipment. They are available in sizes from 3,950 in-lb (329 ft-lb or 446 Nm) to 8,925,000 in-lb (743,750 ft-lb or 1,000,725 Nm).

CONSTRICTING CLUTCHES/BRAKES

Constricting brakes and clutches use an airtube that when pressurized expands inward. The airtube forces friction shoes against a drum surface, thereby transmitting the torque. The unit can be used both as a brake or a clutch depending on the mounting configuration. Units are available to transmit torques from 390 in-lb (32 ft-lb or 44 Nm) to 1,010,000 in-lb (84,167 ft-lb or 113986 Nm).

EXPANDING CLUTCHES/BRAKES

Expanding brakes and clutches are similar to constricting, but expand outward against a drum instead of inward. This style is primarily used as a slip clutch or tension brake. They are available in sizes from 390 in-lbs to 1,010,000 in-lbs.

TORQUE LIMITING CLUTCHES

Torque limiting clutches are available in two styles: friction and ball & detent. Both styles of clutches disconnect the driving and driven component at a determined torque setting. Friction torque limiters use friction plates pressing together to transmit torque, then release when the torque exceeds the friction force. Ball and detent torque limits use balls between two hubs. The hubs are spring loaded and when the torque exceeds the spring force, the hubs disconnect and run on the balls. Torque limiters are primarily used as overload protection to prevent other machines from being damaged.

OVERRUNNING CLUTCHES

Overrunning clutches are often referred to as "one-way" clutches. The clutches can drive in one direction and will overrun when driven in the opposite direction. They are often used in indexing applications and also as a backstop to prevent operation in the opposite direction. They are available in torque ranges from 40 ft-lbs to 700,000 ft-lbs.

PTO Clutch
PTO CLUTCHES

Power Take-Off (PTO) clutches are used to engage/disengage engines while at full speed. PTOs can be actuated by mechanical arm, air or hydraulics. PTOs are available for a wide range of engine sizes and bell housings.

CALIPER DISC BRAKES

Caliper disc brakes can be used in a wide variety of applications. They can be used for emergency braking, tension control, or as a failsafe brake in other arrangements. The brakes can be actuated by air, hydraulic or mechanical means. Calipers are available in braking torques from 3.69 to 400,000 ft-lbs depending on the application information.

Tension Brake
TENSION BRAKES

Tension brakes are mostly operated by air to keep a consistent tension level in a system. The brakes often develop high temperatures due to the fact the brakes are constantly engaged. To prevent overheating, the brakes are often cooled by water or air. Tension brakes are available in slip torques from 35 in-lbs to 1,350,000 in-lbs.

ELECTRIC CLUTCHES/BRAKES

Electric clutches and brakes use electromagnetic attraction to transfer torque. They are often used when applications require some amount of slip. The primary types of electric clutches/brakes are magnetic particle and hysteresis. Magnetic particle units use an input and output shell. When the magnet is energized, particles between the two shells form a rigid bond between the two, thus transferring torque. Hysteresis units use an inner rotor with a coil and an outer disc. The coil generates a magnetic field in the inner rotor which acts on the outer disc. Electric clutches/brakes can transfer torques from 0 to 8,850 ft-lbs.
